Sebenarnya bukan pilot sahaja. Tapi most mariners yg kerja di ports started as pilot. MOST OF CEO AND GM OF PORTS ARE MARINERS.
Ada jadi Marketing Manager, GM Container, GM Conventional, HR Manager dll. Pakcik start kerja Kuantan Port jawatan pegawai laut gaji RM 1,800 dan pakcik pencen Marine Manager Penang Port gaji RM 12,000. Tau la gaji kecik jer kalau nak compare dgn korang. Dari duk ‘nongkrong’ explorelah shore-base employment. BUT KEEP YOUR COC VALID COZ THAT IS YOUR STRATEGIC ASSET. Oil price recover belah naik kapal balik.
Kalau nak join as pilot, sebaiknya ada COC Class 1. But some ports boleh join dari Class 3. Kena undergo training ikut tahap lesen selama beberapa tahun nak dapat ‘unrestricted license’. Cth: nak dpt lesen stage 1 kena jd apprentice pilot 9 bulan. Lepas dpt lesen stage 1 baru boleh anchor kapal <100m shj. Until stage 5 or UR where you can handle unrestricted size to any berth. You can stay as pilot sampai pencen or you can progress your career higher as boss yg ada secretary skirt pendek, dpt kereta and you will never fly economy class.
Other than harbour pilot, jawatan apa yg mariner boleh apply?
1. Traffic Supervisor (TS) – in charge berthing/unberthing, cargo.
2. Berth Planner, Container Planner Yard Planner.
3. VTS Operator/Supervisor.
4. Tanker Terminal Supervisor.
5. Dangerous Goods Supervisor. dll.
Those yang ada sailing experience on tanker are encourage to apply for Loading Master or Tanker Terminal Supervisor. You can progress your career as Terminal Manager or even CEO/COO. Why I say so? because tanker guys have practical know how about operations. Orang kapal pernah pasang hose, cuci tangki dll…takat ISGOTT tu dalam otak jer. Letak tangan kat hose boleh tau pumping rate.
VTS Operators mostly bukan mariner. Kebanyakan grad UMT or Ranaco. VTS Supervisor mostly mariners. So depa ni kena pi training ikut IALA course modul. Better VTS Operator/Supervisor ni ex-mariner coz nak bagi instruction kat kapal kalau ROR tak tau susah ler. DG Supervisor handle safe handling of DG in port areas, stuffing/unstuffing, stowage, segregation dll. Orang kapal hafal 9 classes IMDG.
BUT…starting pay may not be as you expected. Ikut gaji darat ler. Kalau OOW tu dapatlah dlm 3k-4k. Kalau full licensed pilot gaji 5 figures lah. Sementara duk ‘nongkrong’ tu try lah, boleh nak cover byr Mazda RX8 tu…so think out of the box…asyik Kemaman Labuan…so think BIG!
Mariners ada good practical knowledge about port operations, so that is your strength. Cuma you need to add some skills:
1. Management.
2. Corporate governance.
3. Project management.
4. Finance (balance sheet, cash flow, budgeting)
5. Quality Assurance (mcm ISM ler)
Good Practical Experience + Good Management Skills = Make You Somebody in the Industry. So start gugelling look for malaysian port operating companies, private terminal operators and send your resume. (gambar resume make sure pakai baju kot asam pedas…neck tie jgn duk pakai yg halus tu…rambut belah tepi).
So good luck guys, cheers!
